Set up the player for JAWS

You can use the JAWS screen-reader software to access assignments presented in the MyLab player. It is not necessary to install any custom scripts to use the player with JAWS. However, to use the player with JAWS, you must change the player settings.

JAWS is supported on laptop and desktop systems that meet the MyLab system requirements. If you're using a tablet, the player does not yet support screen readers.

To select the player settings for JAWS

1. Open a homework or Extra Practice activity that uses the player.

   Homework and Extra Practice activities typically open in the player, unless they contain only media (video, audio, .pdf file, or .html file).

2. Tap or click the gear icon to the right of the Question Help button.
3. Select Accessibility from the drop-down menu.
4. Select On to enable the settings for JAWS or select No to disable the settings.
5. Select OK.
6. Exit the player without submitting the assignment.
7. Log out of your course.

   When you log in again and open the player, you can use the screen reader to read the questions and enter your answers.

Answer questions with JAWS

You can use JAWS to enter answers to the following types of questions:

• Multiple-choice questions
• Free-response questions (You type your answer into a field using the player command-line language.)
• Math questions

You can cut, copy, and paste using keyboard shortcuts; you also can use the MyLab player's command-line language to enter special characters and symbols.

You will need a human reader to answer the following types of questions:

• Writing questions that require tagging words or phrases in a paragraph or writing an essay.
• Math questions that require creating a graph, plotting on a number line, or reading a visual image such as a graph or table.
• Questions that require you to use the Show Work window.

• Locked-down tests. If you are asked to install the Pearson LockDown Browser when starting a test, contact your instructor for help.

• Interactive grammar activities, where you have to select words in a reading passage.
• Drag-and-drop questions.

JAWS and the Pearson LockDown Browser

Your instructor might require that all students use the Pearson LockDown Browser when taking a test. However, the Pearson LockDown Browser is not compatible with the JAWS screen reader. If an assessment is presented in the lock-down browser or you are asked to install the lock-down browser, you will need to complete the assessment on a laptop or desktop system.
