Create, copy, or link to a course
You can set up a new course by:
- Creating a new course sets up a course that you can use as is or populate with content such as assignments, required Resources, course documents, announcements, and a syllabus.
- Creating a prebuilt course sets up a course with prebuilt materials such as assignments, required Resources, course documents, and a syllabus. You can use the course as is, customize the prebuilt materials, and add your own content.
- Copying a course is the process of setting up a new course based on an existing course. The existing course can be one of your own courses or another instructor's course, assuming the instructor is allowing the course to be copied. As part of the copy, you can also choose to copy assignments and required Resources from the original course, and the new course will have links to any files posted in the original course.
You can fully customize a copied course.
Tip: Copying is particularly useful if you offer the same class several semesters running. Once the course is customized to your liking, you can copy it for the next semester's class.
- Linking to a course is the process of setting up a new course that is based on an existing course. You can change the new course's title, section, start and end dates, student access properties, and assignments. The Resources in the linked course, however, remain linked to the originating course. That is, you cannot change any Resource settings in the linked course, but any changes made to Resources in the original course are automatically reflected in the linked course.
When creating the linked course, you can also choose to copy assignments from the original course. You can then edit and change these assignments and add more. The new linked course will also have links to any files posted in the original course.
Note: If you choose not to create any courses, students can still work in the MyLab on their own. However, you will not be able to see their grades.
For information on the settings that determine whether your course is available to other instructors for copying or linking to, see Edit course copy properties.
