Apply Grammar Exercises

Some writing topics have Apply Grammar exercises. This type of Apply Exercise displays a block of text that you need to correct. For example, you may need to correct the spelling or punctuation.

The grammar exercises display a paragraph of content, with the instructions above the content. For some exercises you need to click the appropriate words or phrases in the content. For other exercises you need to also enter the corrections (for example, the correct punctuation or spelling).

To work through an exercise set:

  1. Display the writing topic.
  2. Click the Apply Exercise link or its Begin button to start an exercise set.
  3. Read the instructions. They tell you the type of corrections that need to be made and how to make them.
instructions at the top of the content box
  4. For more information on the subject being covered in the exercise, choose an option from the Need a refresher? drop-down list at the bottom of the window.
  5. Click Save to save your corrections. Click the Submit button to finish the exercise.
  6. (Optional) Click the Play button to listen to an audio recording of the corrected text.

This is particularly helpful if you want to hear how the corrections make the passage flow better and the sound of using adverbs and adjectives in a sentence. The Play button is available after you submit the exercise.

The MyLab tracks your score in the bottom border. Note that you lose points for:

For some exercises, you just need to click a word or phrase. For example, an exercise could require that you find all the verbs, and you would click the verbs in the text. However, if you click an incorrect word or phrase—for example, a noun instead of a verb—you will lose points.

For other exercises you need to type your correction, which is explained in the following procedure. You can also display a hint, which is explained at the end of this topic.

To enter a correction:
