Submit an Exercise for Automated Feedback

Use this procedure to complete a Writing Practice exercise and submit it for automated feedback. Your submission can be a maximum of 1200 words.

Your instructor determines the number of times you can submit an exercise for automated feedback. The MyLab tracks your submissions and displays the number you have left on the exercise page. Your instructor may have set up the course so you can also submit these exercises to the instructor. When this is the case, the Submit to Instructor button is displayed on the exercise page.

To complete and submit an exercise for automated feedback:

  1. Click the Study Plan tab.
  2. Click Writing to expand it.
  3. Click Writing Practice under Writing.

If the Writing Practice link is not displayed, the course does not include the Writing Practice exercises, which are the only exercises you can submit for automated feedback.

  4. Click the title of the exercise for which you want to write an essay.
  5. Click either the Activities link or the Begin button to start work.

The MyLab displays the exercise page where you write the essay. The bottom of the page displays the number of Submissions remaining for automated feedback for this exercise. Also, when your instructor is accepting submissions of Writing Practice exercises, the MyLab displays the Submit to Instructor button at the bottom of this page.

  6. Read the Writing Prompt for information on how and what to write.
  7. Write the essay in the text box.
  8. (Optional) Click the Save button to save your work as you write. If you want to finish the exercise later, click the Save and Return Later button, then repeat steps 1 – 4 and click the Resume button to continue working.
  9. Click the Submit for Feedback button.

It takes just a moment or two for the MyLab to display the feedback.

  10. Review the feedback.
  11. (Optional) In the Scores section of the feedback, click a trait (Organization, Ideas, Conventions, and so on) for specific feedback on that trait.
  12. Do either of the following:

The MyLab saves the feedback in the exercise's draft history and records the score in your Gradebook. If you submit this exercise again for automated or instructor feedback, the newer score overwrites the previous score in the Gradebook.

You can click the Submit to Instructor button on the exercise page when you are ready to submit the essay to your instructor. (If this button is not displayed, your instructor is not accepting submissions of Writing Practice exercises.) See Flow of Drafts Between You and the Instructor for more information.
