Define an activity grade schema
Updated 19 Feb 2024
The activity Grades page lets you select or create a grade schema for an activity. A grade schema identifies a set of scores, each of which corresponds to a range of raw or percentage scores students might receive.
For example, you can create a 5-point grade schema (A, B, C, D, and F), where each grade corresponds to a range of raw scores (A = 91 - 100, B = 81 - 90, C= 71 - 80, and so on.)
You can select or create a grade schema and apply it to an individual activity when you create or edit it. You can also select or create a grade schema and apply it to all activities of the same activity type in the course.
Pearson provides three pre-defined grade schemas in MyLab IT:
- Default: Classic A through F letter grades.
- Dropbox [File Upload]: Used only for Dropbox activities.
- Pass/Fail: Indicates to students only whether or not they achieved the threshold score.
Similarly, you can also define and apply a grade schema to an individual readiness check or study plan pre-test or post-test, or apply it to all pre-tests or all post-tests in the course.
- Add the activity, add questions to the activity, add messages, and click Grades.
- Select the default grade schema from the Select grade schema list and then go to the last step in this procedure, or click Add new schema and continue to the next step.
- In the Add New Schema window, enter a Grade Schema Name and Description.
- To create the grade range, click Add Grade, enter a grade (such as A A+, or A–), and then enter the lower limit in % Score from and the upper limit in % Score to.
The first grade range must start with zero (0). The grade range must be from 0 to 100 and ranges cannot overlap. For example, if you enter 0 to 79 as the first grade range, the next range must start at 80, not 79.
To add more grade ranges, click Add Grade. To delete a grade range, select it and click Delete Grade.
- Enter Feedback for each grade range.
- Click Save and Close.
After you select a schema, the defined grade ranges appear, including:
- Grade: The grade a student receives
- % Score from: The lower limit of the defined grade range
- % Score to: The upper limit of the defined grade range
- Feedback: The feedback associated with the grade range

To save activity preferences, click Save. To continue creating your activity, click Save and Continue.
If you want to compose your own feedback messages, create a new grade schema on the Grades page and enter your custom messages. Although your course may display a Feedback page, do not use feedback schemas with MyLab IT.
- From any page in your course, click Preferences.
- In the Instructor list on the left, click Activities.
- In the Customize Activity Types section, click Edit in the Preferences column of the activity for which you want to define a grade schema.
- In the Preferences window, click Grading on the left.
- In the Grade Schemas section, click the arrow next to Select grade schema and select a grade schema from the list.
- Click Apply to all to apply the grade schema you selected to all existing and new activities of the activity type you selected.
You can still select an individual activity and apply another grading option—raw score, percentage, or another grade schema—to it at any time.
