Save custom questions

Updated 28 Aug 2023

Open the Choose Settings window to assign properties to your question: Select Save and Exit at the bottom of the Custom Question Builder.

Properties you can set in the Choose Settings window:

  • Name - You must enter a name to identify the question. Names can be up to 25 characters. Students do not see this name.
  • Textbook Content Association - Click Add to associate the question with content in a textbook. If the question is already associated with a textbook, click Edit to change the association or Remove to delete the association.

When you associate the question with a textbook, you must specify the book and you can optionally associate the question with a chapter, section, or objective (if available in your course). When used in an assignment, students' performance on the question is used to update their Study Plan. To be included in the Gradebook's overview of results by section, you must associate the custom question with a textbook, chapter, section, and objective.

You can associate the question with multiple textbooks, but within a textbook you can associate the question only with one area. For example, if you associate a question with Section 3.1.2 in a textbook, you cannot also associate it with Section 5.4.3.

You cannot remove a question's textbook content association after the question is added to a homework assignment, test, or quiz.

  • Keywords - Click Change to associate keywords with the question or change associations. You can use the keywords to help you organize and search for your questions.

When you click Change, the Assign Keywords window displays. To add a new keyword, type it, and then click Add. Do not enter commas or other punctuation marks in keywords.

To disassociate an existing keyword from a question, clear the check box in front of the keyword in the table of available keywords.

To associate an existing keyword with the question, select the check box in front of the keyword in the table of available keywords.

  • Author-defined difficulty - Assign a level of difficulty of the question.
  • Type - This property is automatically selected based on the type of answer used in the question, but you can assign a different type using the dropdown list.
  • Format - This property is automatically selected based on the question, but you can assign a different format using the dropdown list.
  • Description - Optionally enter a description of the question. You can enter up to 168 characters. Later you can search for words or phrases in descriptions to find the question.
  • Sharing - Select the check box to make your question available for copying by other instructors.

In standalone courses, this setting only controls other instructors' ability to copy your questions using the Custom Question Builder. If your custom question is included in a copied assignment, the custom question is always copied with the entire assignment. However, it is not added to the list of custom questions owned by the instructor who copied the assignment.

If a custom question is included in an assignment in a coordinator course and is marked for sharing by the owner of the coordinator course, the question is added to the list of custom questions owned by the instructor of a member course who copies assignment.

Click OK to save your question and list it in the Custom Question Manager.
