The Custom Question Manager
Updated 28 Aug 2023
The Custom Question Manager lets you create new questions and edit your custom questions.
Access varies slightly depending on whether you have a MyLab or Foundations course.
- Go to the Homework/Test Manager.
- Do one of the following:
- From the More Assignment Tools dropdown list, select Manage Custom Questions.
- From the Create Assignment dropdown list, select Create Custom Question.
Click Create New Question to open the Create Custom Question wizard, where you can choose how to create your question.
Do one of the following:
- Display the Manage Assignments page. Next select Custom Question under Create or select Manage Custom Questions under Organize. Then click Create New Question.
- Create or edit an assignment and on Step 2 of the Assignment wizard, click Create my own questions.
Click Update Book Associations to open the Custom Question Update Associations window, where you can automatically update the textbook associations of your custom questions to a new edition of your textbook.
If you have already created custom questions, you see a table of your existing questions.
- Show Questions for Book — Select a textbook from this dropdown list to display only questions associated with that textbook. Select All Books to display all your custom questions.
If you associated a question with a textbook, chapter, and section, the section number appears in a Book Assoc. column to the left of the Question column.
- Show Archived Questions — Select this option to display any archived custom questions. Archived questions appear in italic type in the table.
- Keyword search — Select a keyword from the dropdown list to display only questions tagged with this keyword.
You also can sort the questions listed in the table by clicking on a column heading.
The Apply to Checked dropdown list lets you archive, delete, or restore multiple selected questions in the table. In the left column of the table, check the questions you want to archive, delete, or restore. Then choose the appropriate option from the dropdown list and click Go.
The table of questions shows the question name and the date the question was created.
- Type column — Shows the question type:
- Essay — Essay
- MC — Multiple-choice
- SA — Short-answer
- TF — True/false
- Format column — Shows whether the question is static (the values don't change) or algorithmic (the values change each time the question is accessed).
- Diff column — Shows the difficulty level you assigned to the question. If you did not assign a difficulty level, "None" shows.
- Preview — Opens the question in the player window so you can work the problem as a student would. You can create a new copy of the problem and edit it by clicking Copy and Edit in the preview window.
- Edit — Opens the question in the main window so you can edit it.
If the question has already been used in any assignments, the Confirm Custom Question Edit window appears. To edit the question, click Edit Question. Your edits are reflected in the assignments. If students have already worked on the assignment, you might want to click Copy & Edit so you can make a copy of the question without affecting any assignments that contain the original question.
If you edit a question in a coordinator course, the changes are reflected in all member courses, including in any assignments where the question has been used.
- Copy — Opens the question in the main window so you can save a copy of it. Changes to a copied question do not affect any assignments that contain the original question.
- Print — Lets you print the question. You first get a window where you can choose the characters used to separate periods and decimal places in numbers. The US format is the default choice (a comma separates periods; a period separates decimal places). You also can choose whether to use periods between periods in numbers and commas for decimals (for example, 1.234,567) or SI notation with spaces (for example, 1 234.567). Then click Print to print the question.
You also can print from the player in preview mode to choose the language to display. See Printing custom questions for details.
- Show/Edit Properties — Opens the Show/Edit Properties window, where you can edit the question name, add and edit chapter associations and keywords, set properties, and add a description. This window contains the same options as the Choose Settings window. See Saving custom questions for details.
- Archive — Archive a question. If the question is archived, this option changes to Restore so you can make the question active again.
- Delete — Delete the question.
You cannot delete a question used in an assignment. Instead, you must first delete the assignments that use the question or remove the question from assignments (if students have not done them). If the question is included in an assignment, the Custom Question Archive window opens. From this window you can archive the question. In the Custom Question Archive window, click Archive to store the question as an archived question. The questions still appears in assignments, but it no longer appears in the Custom Question Manager unless you select Show Archived Questions. Archiving a question also excludes it from searches.
When a question is archived, Restore appears in the dropdown menu in place of Delete. Select Restore to make the question active again.
- List Assignments — Opens the Custom Question List Assignments window, which shows you the quizzes, tests, and homework assignments that include this question.
Click Go when you have selected an option.
