Use the Edit Bar Chart window
Updated 28 Aug 2023
The Edit Bar Chart window lets you define a bar chart to include in your question.
Students cannot interact with bar charts that you create in the Custom Question Builder.
To access the Edit Bar Chart window, click Bar Chart in the left menu.
The Bar Chart option is not available in econ, finance, and operations management courses.
See Use a bar chart in a math question for an example of creating a bar chart.
The Edit Bar Chart window has three tabbed pages where you can define your chart. These tabs are described in the following sections.
Title - If you want a title for your bar chart, enter it here. You can right-click and choose Editing Options to insert algorithmic values or you can type in algorithmic values directly.
Show Grid - Clear this option to hide grid lines in your bar chart.
Show Legend - Clear this option to hide the legend for your bar chart. If you included bar labels for your plots, these labels display directly on the plot.
Use Letters for Labels - Select this option to use letters for labels in the legend.
Start Bars at Zero - Select this option to start each bar at zero. If this option is not selected, each bar begins at the minimum value at the base of the bar chart.
Orientation - Select either Vertical or Horizontal to specify the chart's orientation.
Authoring notes - Enter any information you might need if you edit the bar chart later.
Title - To add a label to the axis of your bar chart, enter it here. You can right-click and choose Editing Options to insert algorithmic values or you can type in algorithmic values directly.
Minimum - Enter the lowest value to display as the bottom or left of your bar chart axis.
Maximum - Enter the highest value to display as the top or right of your bar chart axis.
Tick Spacing - Enter a number to change the increments for tick spacing in your bar chart axis. For example, if you enter 5, the tick marks represent increments of 5 (0, 5, 10, 15, and so on). If the tick spacing is greater than the limits of your bar chart, only the zero mark displays. Tick marks do not display until you add a bar to your bar chart.
For the Minimum, Maximum, and Tick Spacing boxes, you can right-click and choose Editing Options to insert algorithmic values or functions; you also can type in the values or functions directly.
Axis Label - Select one of the options in this section to specify which values to label in your bar chart:
- Label Minimum and Maximum - Label only the minimum and maximum values in the bar chart. For example, if the range of your bar chart is from 0 to 100, only these two values are labeled.
- Label Every n ticks - Label every n tick marks. For example, if the range of your bar chart is from 0 to 100, tick spacing is 5 and you label every 2 ticks, the values 0, 10, 20, 30 and so on are labeled. If you set an interval greater than the axis limits, none of the tick marks are labeled.
For each bar you want to create, click Add to display the bar in your chart. Then select a bar in the box and edit its properties using the options below. Select a bar and click Remove to delete the bar.
Value - Enter a numeric value for the selected bar. Use positive integers or decimals only. You can right-click to insert algorithmic values or functions; you also can type in the values or functions directly.
Fill - Click the color code box to display the color chart, and then select the color for your bar by clicking a color or by entering a color code in the box.
Outline - Click the color code box to select an outline color for your bar.
Bar Label - If you want a title for the bar, enter it here. You can right-click and choose Editing Options to insert algorithmic values or you can type in algorithmic values directly.
Chart Size - Move the slider to the left to reduce the overall size of your bar chart; move the slider to the right to enlarge the chart.
Height - Move the slider to the left to reduce the height of your bar chart; move the slider to the right to make the chart higher.
Gap Size - Move the slider to the left to reduce the distance between the bars in your chart; move the slider to the right to increase the size of the chart.
When you have finished formatting your bar chart, click Save to add it to your question.
