Roles in course groups
The instructor who creates the coordinator course and the section instructors have different levels of access, depending on their role.
The instructor who creates a coordinator course automatically becomes the primary instructor for all member sections. The coordinator instructor owns all member sections and uses the coordinator course to manage the course features and content, which are inherited by the member sections.
Changes made to assignments and course settings are pushed to live student sections.
Changes made to the left menu of the course or instructor created pages are not pushed to Member sections. Such changes must be made before the Member Sections are copied.
The coordinator course cannot be used to delete students from a member section, but the coordinator instructor can access a member course and remove students.
The coordinator instructor uses the Edit Course wizard to set the level of access granted to section instructors in course groups:
- By editing the coordinator course, the coordinator instructor can grant the same level of access to all section instructors in the course group.
- By editing the member courses, the coordinator instructor can set different access levels for section instructors.
A section instructor's role and capabilities are determined by the level of access granted by the coordinator instructor. By default, the member course instructor is enrolled in the course as a section instructor with restricted access.
Section instructors can only enroll in courses that are student-use. To add section instructors to a coordinator course, they must enroll in the course before it is converted to coordinator course.
The following table shows what section instructors with different levels of access can do while teaching their member section. The coordinator instructor can also set custom access levels by choosing the tasks that section instructors are allowed to perform. See Set up your course for details.
