Remove or replace questions in tests
Updated 23 Sep 2022
You can remove or replace questions in a test after students have worked on it.
- From the Test Manager, select Actions > Remove Questions or Replace Questions.
These options do not display when no student has worked on the test. Choose Actions > Edit to change questions from a test with no results.
- Select either the Remove Question tab or the Replace Question tab.
- Select the questions to remove or replace:
- To remove a question, select Remove Question.
- To replace a question, select Replace Question and choose the replacement.
You must leave at least one question in a test.
About removing questions
- Students automatically get full credit on the removed questions, but they cannot work or review these questions.
- If any students submitted the test before questions were removed, the removed questions are automatically scored as correct and test scores are automatically adjusted.
- Only an entire pooled question can be removed. You cannot remove individual exercises from question pools.
- You cannot remove questions from adaptive tests.
- Removing questions does not affect omitted results.
- When students hand in a test late and incur a late-submission penalty, they are given full credit for removed questions minus the penalty.
- In Item Analysis reports, you see an asterisk (*) followed by "Changed by instructor" for removed questions, as well as for questions that were scored as correct.
- In program groups, questions removed from a test in the coordinator program are not automatically removed in the member programs. Instead, you must remove the questions from the member programs.
About replacing questions
- You can replace a question only once.
- Scores are not adjusted for students who have already completed their test.
- Students who have already worked on the test see the new question when they make a new attempt.
- When students already have a score for the replaced question and get a lower score on the replacement question, they are prompted to choose which score to save.
- When students who answered the replaced question review their work, they see a message asking whether they want to do the replacement question. Their answer on the replacement question does not affect their score.
- You cannot replace all of the questions in a test. At least one question from the original test must remain.
- In program groups, questions replaced in the coordinator program are not automatically inherited by the member programs. Instead, you must replace the questions in the member programs.
- When you copy a course or a test, only the replacement questions appear in the copied test.
For a test with a problematic question, you also can award full credit to all students by scoring the question as correct.
