Restrict tests to specific IP addresses
If your institution uses proxy servers to control student access to the internet, you can require students to use these proxies when taking tests. For example, if you restrict tests to a proxy server accessible only from a computer lab, students have to take the tests in that lab.
You can access restricted tests without using the proxy server when you work using an instructor account.
Proxy servers are identified by their IP addresses — for example 192.68.12.0. To restrict tests to one or more proxy servers, you first need the IP addresses. Contact your local lab or IT administrator to get the required addresses.
- From the Program Manager, select Actions > Change Settings for the program.
- Select Edit in the Learning Aids and Test Options section.
- For IP Address Range, check Require students to take IP-restricted tests within the following IP address range.
- Optionally select Change and select Add IP Address range.
If you do not set a range at the program level, you can specify IP address ranges for individual tests.
- Enter the starting and ending IP addresses. You can use Tab or Shift+Tab to move between the sections of the address. If you are specifying only one IP address, enter the same address in both boxes.
- Optionally, select Add IP Address Range again to specify additional IP address ranges. The maximum number of ranges is five.
If you change the program-level restrictions after the program has started, the revised settings are applied only to new tests. For example, if you specify two IP address ranges and later remove one of them, existing tests continue to have the two ranges, but new tests have only one.
- From the Test
Manager, open the Create/Edit Test wizard:
- If you are creating a new test, select Create Test and choose the appropriate option.
- If you are editing an existing test, select Actions > Edit for the test.
- In step 3, under Access Controls, edit the IP Address Range settings:
- Check or uncheck Students must access this test from the following IP address range to add or remove IP address restrictions.
- Select Change to add, edit, or remove specific IP ranges.
- From the Test Manager, select More Tools > Change Settings for Multiple Assignments.
- To make your changes to specified tests, select Specific Assignments > Choose to pick the tests.
- In step 3 of the wizard, under Access Controls, edit the IP Address Range settings:
- Check or uncheck Students must access this test from the following IP address range box to add or remove IP address restrictions.
- Select Change to open the IP Address Range window, where you can add, edit, or remove specific IP ranges.
- Select Apply Settings on the Change Settings for Multiple Assignments page.
