Use Respondus Monitor Proctoring
Updated 20 May 2024
Respondus Monitor® is a fully-automated proctoring solution. It builds upon and starts with the Pearson LockDown Browser — a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a learning system. Respondus Monitor adds webcam proctoring and remotely monitors and records students taking an online test or quiz. Using students' webcams and screen-sharing, it detects activities that might indicate cheating and alert you to review the recording of a student's session.
You can configure the steps students must take before they can start the test — for example, presenting a photo ID or panning the room with their webcam. You can view the resulting video recordings for your students and get reports on individual student sessions.
Respondus Monitor Proctoring is not available in all programs.
To use Respondus Monitor Proctoring, you must first enable it for your program:
- Open the Edit Course wizard and go to step 5, Learning Aids and Test options.
- In LockDown Browser and Proctoring section, select Use automated proctoring.
- Select Respondus Monitor Proctoring from the list.
- Select the license setup link.
- In the Respondus window, enter your institution's license code or choose to make students pay individually. Students pay only once to use Respondus Monitor Proctoring for the entire program.
When creating or editing the test:
- Go to step 3 of the test wizard, Choose Settings.
- Under Access Controls, select Require LockDown Browser with Respondus Monitor Proctoring from the LockDown Browser and Proctoring list.
- Save the test. You cannot set proctoring requirements for students until the test is saved.
- In the Test Manager, select More Tools > Respondus Monitor Proctoring Dashboard.
- Locate the test and select Advanced Settings to choose:
- The steps students must take before the webcam session begins. You can preview the start-up steps and edit the instructions if allowed by your institution.
- An optional password that students must enter.
- Facial recognition and microphone settings.
You cannot apply individual student settings to proctored tests. To make the test accessible to individual students, either let them do the test without proctoring or let them do a copy of the test and then enter their scores manually in your gradebook.
When students access a proctored test:
- They are prompted to install the Pearson LockDown Browser, if necessary.
- They must complete the start-up steps, such as testing their video and audio and showing their ID. Instructions on how to take the test are included in the steps.
Students should go to https://web.respondus.com/support if they have problems accessing a test.
When students submit the test, the recording is processed and becomes available to you in the Respondus Monitor Proctoring Dashboard.
In program groups, member programs inherit program settings, test settings, and the license. Member instructors with permission can edit the settings for their program.
When a member program is removed from its program group, all settings and the license are retained.
When you copy a program that you own, your Respondus Monitor Proctoring settings and license are copied to the new program. However, if you copy a program from another instructor, the settings are cleared and you must enter a new license.
When you copy a test, the Respondus Monitor Proctoring settings are preserved. But when you import tests from another program, LockDown Browser settings are preserved, but Respondus Monitor Proctoring settings are removed.
See Review proctored sessions for details on viewing students' webcam recordings.
