Assignments

Instructors have the option of creating assignments in your course. If you are in an instructor's course, you might have assignments; if you are working on your own, you do not have assignments. (Only an instructor can create assignments.) The types of assignments your instructor can create are listed below. Keep in mind, though, that the instructor chooses which types of assignments, if any, to create.

Composition: This type of assignment is a writing task that requires each student to submit her or his work to the instructor. After you complete and submit a draft, the instructor comments on and grades the draft. Also see Composition assignments.
Collaboration: For a collaboration assignment, groups of two or more students work together to create a document. The instructor defines the assignment and sets up the student groups. When your group submits a draft, the instructor comments on and grades it. By default, all students in a group receive the same grade, but the instructor can grade each student individually. Peer review: For this type of assignment, students review each other's work. The base component is a completed composition assignment. This completed assignment becomes the document that everyone reviews. After entering your review comments, you submit them to the instructor for comments and a grade. Portfolio: For a portfolio assignment, you create and submit an online portfolio for your instructor to comment on and grade. As with other assignments, the instructor has the option of providing you with guidelines for the portfolio content. Also see Portfolio assignments.
Skill-building: Your instructor has the option of creating skill-building assignments to track your work on chapter exams. As you go through a chapter exam, the MyLab gives you immediate feedback, letting you know whether your answer is correct or incorrect. When a question requires that you write a response, the MyLab submits the exercise to the instructor to review and grade. Also see Skill-building assignments.
Diagnostic: Similar to skill-building assignments, a diagnostic assignment consists of diagnostic exercises selected by your instructor. However, in a diagnostic assignment, you must complete an exercise before the MyLab displays your results. Based on your results, the MyLab adds Resource topics that are aimed at helping you strengthen your skills to My Study Plan. Also see Diagnostic assignments and My Study Plan.

Your instructor can comment on and grade your composition, collaboration, peer review, and portfolio assignments. You can display a draft history to view the instructor's comments, and the grades appear in the To Do page's My Assignments lists and in the Student Results Summary.

The MyLab automatically scores most skill-building and all diagnostic assignments and displays the results on your To Do page and in the Student Results Summary. For any skill-building exercises with written responses, the MyLab also displays the instructor's grade on the To Do page and Student Results Summary.
