Create and publish assignments
Updated 18 Oct 2023
Creating assignments can help you monitor student performance in your course and promote greater student engagement. Once created, you can edit various aspects of the assignment depending on the assignment's status.
Before you begin, you'll want to read about how course settings interact with your assignments.
You have two ways to create assignments:
If you see Use quick setup on the Dashboard, you can create all your assignments at one time. Each assignment covers one chapter of material and is generally due on the same day and at the same time each week.
This option appears only until you create at least one assignment. After that, follow the steps in the following section to create more assignments or edit the assignments you made.
- On the Dashboard or from the screen prompt, select Use quick setup.
- Deselect content you don't need, such as introductions and reference sections. Then select Next.
- In Schedule, set a due day and time for all assignments, and a time frame when students can begin work on assessments.
- In Assignment Calendar, move individual assignments to another day in the same week if you want. For example, if assignments are usually due on Monday, you might move an assignment to Tuesday to avoid a Monday holiday.
- Select Create assignments.
If you're creating a large number of assignments, your screen displays an estimated time for assignment creation. If that estimate is more than a few minutes, you can enter a mobile phone number to receive a text when the process is complete.
- Select Continue with course setup to review course settings, or select another course page to begin exploring your course.
Assignments appear on the Dashboard as they're created.
You can create individual assignments at any time. For example, if you create assignments for the first half of your course using Quick setup as described above, you can create more assignments for the rest of your course when you're ready.
- On the Dashboard, select Customize assignments one by one to create your first assignment, or select Create assignment for all other assignments.
- Select assignment content from the Content library. Filter the content to find what you want quickly.
- Drag content to the Assignment contents box or select Add. You can select any content that's not already assigned, and include up to 50 items in an assignment. Content you've already assigned is checked and can't be assigned again.
- Change the assignment's name if you want.
- Add an assignment due date.
- The due time initially matches the due time you set when you created the course, but you can set another due time for any assignment. A popular choice is 11:59 PM to avoid confusion about whether assignments are due at midnight or noon.
- Optionally, add a note for students.
- Select Publish to make the assignment visible to students, or Save to keep it private.
Students see these notes when they open an assignment. You and students can see the notes when viewing course materials.
Students can see assigned readings and dynamic study modules (if you have them) immediately, and see other assigned assessments in the time frame you set.
Your new assignment appears on the Dashboard. If you don't see it, select the Show filter, then all assignments.
After creating assignments, you can:
