Hotspots for accessibility (Mohr's circle questions)

Updated 30 Aug 2024

Adding hotspots for elements on the workspace makes these accessible to students using a keyboard and/or a screen reader when answering Mohr's circle questions.

Add/edit hotspots in a Mohr's circle question

  1. Create a question using the Mohr's circle answer type.
  2. Select Edit Answer in the Answer box for the Mohr's circle question.

The graphing tool and settings open in a new window. If working on a laptop, the settings box may appear below the workspace.

  3. Choose hotspots from the settings box.
(It doesn’t matter whether “Initial plot location” or Correct answer” is selected in the drawing tool.)
  4. Select Add hotspot +.

By default, the hotspot appears at the origin (x:0, y:0). The hotspot looks like a purple point.

  5. Reposition the hotspot: On the graphing workspace, drag the hotspot. Alternatively, you can change the x, y values on the hotspots tab.

For analysis questions, you can also set a hotspot to be on the circle's circumference at an angle.

  6. Description: Add a hotspot description that will be read by a screen reader to identify the object or element on the workspace.

The description should be written like Alt tags that are added to images for students who use screen readers.

  7. Continue to add hotspots with descriptions for all areas on the workspace that a student would need to be aware of in order to answer the question.
  8. When you finish, choose Save (bottom right).
  9. To test the hotspots in the student view of the question, use a screen reader.

Don't have a screen reader on your computer? Search online to find a free one.
