Adjust scoring
Updated 16 Jan 2024

You can choose how scores and averages are calculated and displayed. These scoring options do not affect the settings for how mastery is assessed in the Learning Path Manager.
Using an LMS? If you have synchronized your MyLab and LMS gradebooks, only the Attempts to Include and Instructor's Scores options are available. Other scoring options are set in your LMS gradebook.
To set scoring options, open the Manage Grades page and select Set Scoring Options from the More Tools list.
You can set:
- Attempts to Include - When a student has taken an assessment multiple times, this setting determines which score is included when calculating the student's overall score for a content area or average score for the quizzes and tests gradebook categories.
Choose Most recent score if you set a later lower score to overwrite mastery status. Otherwise the score students see on the Topic/Lesson Activities page will not match the score used to calculate mastery status.
Average score and All scores are not available when you synchronize the MyLab gGradebook with your LMS gradebook.
- Score Calculations - When set to Current average, only assignments with results are used to calculate a student's average. Cumulative performance calculations are not yet available.
- Score Display - Choose Points to show all scores as points earned/total points available.
- Instructor's Scores - Choose Include to include instructor's scores in class averages and display the instructor as an active student in the roster.
- Students' Scores - Choose Hide Overall Score to suppress the overall score on a student's Results page. Choose Show Overall Score and check the options to manage how scores are displayed to students.

You can drop lowest scores for your entire class for each gradebook category.
- Open the Manage Grades page and select Drop Lowest Scores from the More Tools list.
- Choose whether to drop scores only for your current content area or from all content areas.
- For each gradebook category, choose the number of lowest scores to drop.
- Select Drop Lowest Scores to drop current lowest scores. Future lowest scores are not affected.
A coordinator instructor can drop lowest scores in the coordinator course to apply the setting to all member sections in a course group.
Limitations:
- Dropping scores does not change mastery status.
- You cannot drop lowest scores in institutional courses.
- You cannot drop lowest scores for the Reading Level or Learning Catalytics content areas. (You can manage scores within Learning Catalytics.)
- If you synchronize your LMS and MyLab gradebooks, you must manage scores in the LMS gradebook.

If a test or quiz has a problematic question, you can award full credit for the question to all students. If the question is included in a question pool, the pooled question is scored as correct. If you have applied a late submission penalty, the student gets full credit minus the penalty.
Students cannot work on or review a question after you have scored it as correct.
- From the Manage Grades page, select Assignments > All Assignments.
- Select the Item Analysis icon
next to the Class Average score for the test or quiz with the problematic question.
- Optionally select the question ID to preview it in the player.
- Select the problematic question in the Score as Correct column of the table and then select Score as Correct in the pop-up window.

You can assign a score to unsubmitted assignments in modules or topics/lessons where a student has demonstrated mastery. If you award credit more than once with different scores, all assignments that were given earlier scores are updated with the most recent score.
Awarding credit for mastery is not available for the Learning Catalytics, Reading Level, and Writing Practice content areas. It is also unavailable in institutional courses.
To award credit for all students for all mastered assignments in a content area:
- Open the Manage Grades page and select Award Credit for Mastery from the More Tools list.
- Enter a score.
