Set up your course
Updated 17 Jan 2024
Your MyLab Foundational Skills course can be structured in different ways.

The personalized Learning Paths structure is the default. Students take pre-tests or the Path Builders and Skills Checks (when available) and then work only the modules and topics/lessons that they need to learn. Students see only their Learning Path and the Calendar on the Course Home.
This is a mastery-based model and is best for a self-paced or self-accelerated course where you work with students to help them complete the course materials.
To set up a course with personalized learning paths:
- Review the course coverage and modify it, if necessary.
- Review the Learning Path and modify it, if necessary.

You can combine Learning Paths with scheduled assignments. Students take the pre-tests or the Path Builders and Skills Checks (when available) and also do your assignments, whether or not they mastered a related module or topic/lesson.
When you specify a due date for even one assignment, the Assignments Due tab is added to the Course Home.
To set up a course with a Learning Path and assignments:
- Review the course coverage and modify it, if necessary.
- Review the Learning Path and modify it, if necessary.
- Create assignments.
- Manage due dates and optionally unassign assignments on the Learning Path.
- If you unassigned Path Builders or Skills Checks, edit the Learning Path to make these assignments optional.

You can hide Learning Paths and use only assignments. Students can use Extra Practice to study for the assignments.
To set up a course using only assignments:
- Review the course coverage and modify it, if necessary.
- Review the Learning Path and modify it, if necessary.
- Edit the Home Page to hide the Learning Path.
The Learning Path will be visible until you schedule at least one assignment.
- Create assignments.
- Manage due dates to assign due dates to activities and assessments.
- If you unassigned Path Builders or Skills Checks, edit the Learning Path to make these assignments optional.
Note: If a preassessment is required for learning path access but all assessments of that type are unassigned, students cannot access any assignment in the course.
