Create assignments
Updated 17 Jan 2024
- Open Manage Assignments for the content area.
- Under Create in the Assignment Tasks, select Test, Quiz or Homework.

Tests and quizzes are separate categories so you can give them different weights for calculating student scores.
- On step 1, the Start tab, give the assignment a name, and choose a unit, if available in your course. Select the type from the list.
The test or quiz type determines where students access the test and its role in assessing student mastery.
- If you work in a learning management system, optionally select Send grades for this assignment to the LMS gradebook.
- Select Next.
- On step 2, the Add/Remove Content tab, filter the list of Available Questions:
- Choose a module, topic/lesson, and objective (if applicable) from the dropdown lists.
- For Book, optionally select Change to add questions from a different textbook.
- Under Availability, optionally select filters to show only accessible questions, questions that are or are not in the student's Study Plan.
- Under Question Source, select the questions to display:
- Show publisher questions displays questions from your Pearson textbook.
- Show custom questions (+) for this book displays any custom questions you created that are associated with the textbook and the selected module, topic/lesson, and objective.
- Show other custom questions displays questions you created for other textbooks or that have no textbook association. Refine Selection displays custom questions by criteria you specify.
- Create my own questions opens the Custom Question Builder, where you can author your own questions.
- If you work in a learning management system, optionally select Send grades for this assignment to the LMS gradebook.
- Select the questions from the Available Questions list and select Add to move them to the My Selections list.
Hover over a question to see a thumbnail. On some questions, a metrics bar graph shows question difficulty.
Screen reader-accessible questions are marked with a hearing icon
.
-
You also can select questions and choose Preview and Add to view and edit the questions before adding them.
- If available, optionally create a question pool to associate multiple exercises with a single question. Select the exercises from the Available Questions list and then select Pool to move the pool to the My Selections list. When a pooled question is opened, only one of the exercises contained in the pool displays.
If your questions use algorithmic values, students are very unlikely to see the same question with the same values.
To turn off pooling, select Pooling options at the top of the My Selections list.
- Optionally select View question details to adjust scoring, enable specified question help, and require students to show their work.
- Optionally select View student test to open the assignment in the player.
- Select Next to go to step 3 to choose settings and competency mappings, if applicable.

-
Enable or disable Skill Builder for the assignment. This option is selected by default if Skill Builder is enabled in the course settings.
Skill Builder monitors students' work and offers adaptive help when needed. Skill Builder opens with an easier question based on the learning objective. If the student cannot answer, Skill Builder asks questions based on prerequisite knowledge, down to two levels of prerequisites. After succeeding, the student can return to the original homework question or continue to practice in Skill Builder. - If you enable Skill Builder for the assignment, select one of the following settings:
- Optional: Student may leave the Skill Builder practice at anytime.
This option is selected by default, and allows students to close Skill Builder and return to the homework assignment. - Required: Student must complete the Skill Builder practice before returning to their homework.
This option allows instructors to require students to complete Skill Builder recommendations when they answer a question incorrectly. Skill Builder automatically opens and the student must complete the practice before they can return to the homework assignment.
- Optional: Student may leave the Skill Builder practice at anytime.
- Enable or disable Personalized Homework for each student based on their performance on tests or quizzes selected from the list.
When a student does a personalized homework, the questions that the student mastered on the prerequisite test or quiz show as already done and the homework has an initial score.
Personalized homework assignments do not update if a student does the prerequisite again. Delete the results of the homework to regenerate it based on subsequent attempts at the prerequisite. See personalized homework assignments.

In some courses, you can add questions from related textbooks to an assignment, with limitations:
- The questions must come from related textbooks and not all questions are available.
- You can't add questions for all types of assignments (for example Writing Skills essays).
- You cannot add custom questions associated with a related textbook.
- Questions from related books are not marked as mastered in personalized homework.
- Student results on an assignment that contains questions from other books cannot be imported into another course.
To add questions:
- In step 2 of the Assignment wizard, select Change ... after the textbook's name.
- Choose a textbook from the list and select Select Book.
- Select the questions from the Available Questions list. Questions from related textbooks have an asterisk before the question number.

You can link to external media (for example, a YouTube video) and associate it with your textbook to automatically add it to your assignment:
- In step 2 of the Assignment wizard, select Media > Add my own media.
- Enter the details in the Add External Media Link window. The type you select determines the icon used to represent the media.
You also can create assignments by copying a sample assignment.
