Import assignments
Updated 17 Jan 2024
You can import your assignments from a course that uses the same edition of your textbook, a previous edition, or a textbook with similar coverage. You also can import assignments created by another instructor (or by you in another account) when the assignments are set to allow others to import.

- Open the Manage Assignments page for the content area.
- Under Create in the list of tasks, select Import Assignments from Another Course.
- On step 1, the Start tab, choose an import option:
- Import assignments from other courses using this book — Assignments from other instructors must be set to allow others to import.
- Convert and import assignments from courses using a previous edition of your textbook or related books with similar coverage — Only questions that exactly match your current textbook are imported. The questions are renumbered to match your current textbook.
This step displays only when your textbook questions can be matched with another edition of the book or a similar book.
- Select Next.
- On step 2, the Select Import Options tab, select the source of the assignments to import:
- Assignments from my courses for this book — Select this option when your course uses the same textbook.
- Assignments from other instructors' courses at... — Select this option when the course is taught by another instructor at your school.
If your institution doesn’t display, you can:- Select Change to choose an institution from which to import assignments. This change does not impact your account. To change the institution on your account, Edit your account settings.
- Select the third option, Assignments from instructors at...
- Assignments from instructors at — Choose a school or learning management system. For MyLab and Mastering, MathXL or MathXL for School, select CourseCompass/XL.
- ... with this log-in — Enter the other instructor's username. You do not need their password.
- Reload publisher activities from the master course — If you expanded course coverage after students have results, use this option to import all the assignments that came with your course originally. You might choose this option if:
- There are new or updated assignments to the prebuilt master course (such as MediaShare assignments) and you want those updates.
- You edited copies of the prebuilt assignments and want new copies of the original assignments to start fresh.
- Select Next.
- On step 3, the Choose Course tab, select the textbook from the Book list, if applicable, and choose a course to import from.
- Select Next.
- On step 4, the Select Assignments tab:
- Optionally use the filter buttons to display only one category of assignment.
- Choose assignments to import from the table or select the checkbox in the table head to import all assignments.
- Optionally choose Import Assignment Settings to include settings, such as start and end dates and review options.
- Select Import at the bottom of the page to import the selected assignments.

After the import, review the summary of the imported assignments:
- When you imported from a different book, you see any questions that were excluded because they do not match questions in your existing textbook.
- If you imported custom questions from a course using a different book, you see these questions and must manually update associations from the Assignment Manager.

The following are not imported:
- Custom questions created by another instructor (or by yourself in a different account).
- Media in homework activities.
- Assignment prerequisites.
- Learning Catalytics assignments.
