Mastering platform update: copied course characteristics

When you copy an existing course to the Mastering platform update, the new course keeps most, but not all, of the original course content or settings.

Sometimes, a homework assignment becomes a quiz in the platform update. Learn about copied homework assignments.

What automatically copies What does not copy

Course settings:

  • Country
  • Time Zone

Course settings:

  • Course Title
  • Course End Date
  • Student ID setting
  • Custom Learning Outcomes

You’ll specify course settings during the update.

Mastering publisher-provided items:

  • Updated if a new version of the item, or a corresponding substitute item, is available.
  • Preserved in the assignment in their original form if no update is necessary.
  • Removed from the assignment if they are inactive or are no longer part of the new textbook content.

Display Settings:

  • Allow Students to see their Total Score
  • Forward Student Comments to Email Address

Standard assignments:

  • Standard assignments from the original course, unless they’re from an unrelated book resource.
  • Any assigned publisher items reflect the new edition content.

Assignment due dates:

  • You’ll need to assign due dates.

Items from a different book/resource:

  • Any assignment items from an unrelated book resource copy.

Dynamic Study Modules:

  • You'll need to assign the DSMs associated with the new edition.

Learning outcomes:

  • All learning outcomes are associated with the same items as in the original course. In the Learning Outcomes Summary, the number of items associated with each outcome is preserved, but the percentage complete is reset to 0, and average scores are blank.

My Items:

  • Any items you edited or created do not copy.

Adaptive follow-up assignments:

  • The parent assignment copies. You’ll create Personalized Homework to create follow-up homework.

Section instructors:

  • Section instructor names and privileges do not copy.
  • Section instructors must join the course. The course creator should follow up with any privilege adjustments.

Freehand Grader assignments:

  • Freehand Grader assignments copy. Any grading criteria copies, but grading notes do not.

Announcements:

  • Course announcements that students see on their Course Home page do not copy.

Offline Activities:

  • Customized Offline Activities, such as classroom lab assignments, are available for you to import scores to the Gradebook.

Student information:

  • Data about students who enrolled in the original course (names, grades, and so on) do not copy.

eTextbook annotations:

  • Any instructor highlights and notes show in the eTextbook of the course. (The copy must be based on the same edition textbook.)

Groups:

  • Student groups do not copy.

Gradebook Categories:

  • Most categories in the original course copy.
  • Scheduled Reading and Interactive Lab categories do not copy.

eTextbook links in assignment instructions:

  • Links do not copy and aren’t available in assignment notes.

Gradebook display preferences:

  • Gradebook display preferences, like points vs. percentage copy. Your preferences are stored with your Pearson account, so they always apply to any course Gradebook you view.

Learning Catalytics modules:

  • All Learning Catalytics modules associated with the original course are available, but you’ll need to import them into the new course.

Gradebook Weighting value:

  • Weighting values by points copy to the new course.
  • You’ll need to recreate custom or equal weighting values.

Scheduled Reading assignments

  • You'll need to create and assign any scheduled reading as "media" in homework assignments. Media types include eTextbooks. the eTextbook icon

Question pools

  • Question pools copy to the new course. They are broken into smaller pools based on the number of questions served to students.
