Use Skill Builder for adaptive practice
If available in your course, you can enable and optionally require Skill Builder for adaptive practice when students do homework assignments.
How students use Skill Builder
A student who opens Skill Builder gets an easier question based on the learning objective for the question they're working on. If the student can't answer this question, Skill Builder offers questions based on prerequisite knowledge down to two levels of prerequisites. When the student succeeds, they can either:
- Close Skill Builder and return to the homework question.
- Remain in Skill Builder for more practice.
See the student help for details on working in Skill Builder.
Enable Skill Builder in the course
To use Skill Builder in homework assignments, you must enable it at the course level:
- Go to the New/Edit course wizard.
- Under Learning Aids and Test Options, select Skill Builder.
Manage Skill Builder in the assignment
- Enable or disable Skill Builder for individual assignments on step 1, the Start tab, of the New Homework wizard.
- If you enable Skill Builder for the assignment, select one of the following settings:
- Optional: Student may leave the Skill Builder practice at anytime.
This option is selected by default, and allows students to close Skill Builder and return to the homework assignment. - Required: Student must complete the Skill Builder practice before returning to their homework.
This option allows instructors to require students to complete Skill Builder recommendations when they answer a question incorrectly. Skill Builder automatically opens and the student must complete the practice before they can return to the homework assignment.
- Optional: Student may leave the Skill Builder practice at anytime.
- In the settings for the assignment, offer only screen reader-accessible questions in Skill Builder.
- For more focused practice, combine Skill Builder with Personalized Homework on step 1, the Start tab, of the New Homework wizard.
