Characteristics of a copied course

You set up the main course settings as you copy the course. The following basic course settings are preserved from the original Mastering course. How to change these course settings

• Textbook, unless copying to a new or different edition
• Country
• Time Zone
• Student ID Setting (whether students are prompted to enter an ID when they enroll)

Learning Outcomes are copied from the original course. You can also copy only the learning outcomes from one of your own courses.

All standard Mastering assignments are copied to the new course, except if they’re from an unrelated book resource. Any Scheduled Reading assignments are also copied into a course copy based on the same textbook edition.

Assigned items reflect any updates by the publisher except for edited My Items

• If any items have since been republished by the publisher (corrected or otherwise updated), they're automatically updated to the most recent version. This applies to course copies based on the same edition textbook.

  Any assigned publisher items you have edited do not get updated. For details, see My Items below.

• Publisher-provided items that have been removed/retired from the Item Library do NOT copy into course assignments in the new course.
  

If you copy to a new edition textbook...

See the section above, “If you choose a new edition”. Also, any links to eText pages you add as assignment instructions do NOT get updated automatically because the textbook is different.

Assignment dates

Due date and time selections during course copy

• When copying a course, instructors can choose from Don't copy dates, Copy exact dates, or Adjust dates based on this first assignment due date (due dates match the intervals between assignments in the original course).
• If you choose Adjust dates based on this first assignment due date, check that due dates in the new edition course don't conflict with any holidays. The due dates (and availability until dates) in the new course will not go beyond the course end date.

Assignment availability dates in the course copy

• The default Available From date is one week before the Due Date/Time. The default Available Until dates match the course end date from the new course.
• If you change the default Available Until date in the original course and then choose Adjust the dates based on this first assignment due date when copying the course, the Available Until date in the new course will not go beyond the course end date.

Includes the title, category, and staff notes. All grading and presentation settings are also copied.

All content organization customizations for items in assignments

Includes any message or instructions in the assignment, point values, extra credit, whether items are pooled, whether items must be worked in serial order or in a randomized sequence, and whether variables will be randomized.

All learning outcomes associated with items

All learning outcomes are associated with the same items as in the original course. In the Learning Outcomes Summary, the number of items that are associated with each outcome is preserved, but the percentage complete is reset to 0, and average scores are blank.

Any items you've edited or created are copied into the new course.

You may need to replace a publisher item you had previously edited (My Item) and assigned.

Any assigned publisher items you have edited do not get updated when you copy a course. You are responsible for maintaining the content in a customized My Item, including in any assignments. How to replace items in an assignment

To find custom My Items when you copy a course to a different or new edition...

Select the No Chapter Specified filter in the Item Library. (When a course is copied based on a new edition or different textbook, all copied My Items become associated with No Chapter Specified—even if you had specified in the original course that the My Items belonged to certain chapters or sections.) All Adaptive Follow-Up assignments that were part of the original course are available using the same (editable) settings, and based on the dates given for the Parent assignments.

Assigned Dynamic Study Modules are copied as long as the copied course is based on the exact same textbook.

Details about the copied assigned modules

All Dynamic Study Modules assigned in the original course are assigned with the same (editable) settings. This includes any edits made to an assigned module, such as to reduce the number of questions.

• Assigned modules are NOT copied when you copy a course to a different or new edition textbook. (This is because of the different content.)
• To assign modules in the new course, see add and assign Dynamic Study Modules in the course.

Freehand Grader assignments are copied when you copy a course, regardless of the textbook edition. (Any grading criteria are copied but grading notes are not.) You can also copy Freehand Grader assignments from or to another course.

To identify these assignments, open or preview the assignment. “Freehand Grader” appears above the assignment content.

All Learning Catalytics modules associated with the original course are available for the copied course, whether the course is based on the same textbook or a new edition textbook.

Learning Catalytics can be used with any textbook, in any Mastering discipline...

You can choose questions from Pearson, the wider academic community, or create your own questions.

Instructor Document Sharing files are shared across copied courses. If another instructor copies one of your courses, the files you added to the original course will be present in the copy. More on Document Sharing and copied courses

Categories

All categories in the original course are copied.

Weighting value

All weighting values that have been specified for categories in the original course are copied into the new course.

Display Preferences, like points vs percentage

Gradebook display preferences are not copied. Your preferences are stored with your Pearson account, so they always apply to any course Gradebook you view.

Course settings you specify as you create a Mastering course copy. These apply for a regular course copy or when you copy to a new edition textbook. (To edit these course settings later, select from the course tile on the My Courses page, then Edit course details.)

• Course Name
• Description (optional)
• Allow Copy (optional)
• Course Dates (from and to, in Eastern Time US)
• Enrollment Dates (from and to, in Eastern Time US), except for instructors using a Mastering course paired with an LMS, such as Blackboard, D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, Sakai, or Schoology. Instructor Help for using Mastering with your LMS

Course display settings you can specify after you create a Mastering course copy.
Display settings (Allow Students to see their Total Score and Forward Student Comments to Email Address) are set to their regular defaults in the new course. How to edit these course display settings

Any publisher items that have been removed/retired from the Item Library do not appear in any course assignments.

• How to identify assignments that have had older items removed or updated in a copied course
• Add points and/or items to assignments in the copied course to match the assignment points in the original course

Any assignment items from an unrelated book resource are not copied into the new course. Only assignment content from the same textbook or a supplemental resource like a lab guide will copy into the new course. The content can be from another edition.

Section instructor names and privileges are not copied.

Mastering course announcements that students see on their Course Home page are not copied.

Data about students who enrolled in the original course (names, grades, and so on) are not copied.
