Automatic scoring of Mastering assignments
Updated 19 Feb 2024
Almost all student responses are scored automatically in Mastering standard assignments, except for essay free-form text answers and Freehand Grader assignments which you must grade individually. You can adjust an assignment score for one or more students at any time.
Instructors and section instructors with Assignments privilege can make changes that affect scoring in the create/edit assignment process, including:
- On the Settings page, you can change grading and presentation settings.
For example, you can control the number of answer tries per question (normally 6 for Homework, and 1 for Quiz or Test), whether students can complete the assignment multiple times for a best score, when students are shown their assignment score, and more.
- On the Organization page, you can set the point value for each item.
Unless you use assignment settings to prevent or delay showing students their scores:
- Students see individual item scores as soon as they submit each item.
- Students see the full assignment score as soon as they complete the assignment.
- Each student's Scores page displays grades for all assignments and the Assignment Grade page displays item-by-item scores and details.
Adaptive Follow-Ups and
Dynamic Study Module assignments:
The item and assignment scores are always available, and students can see immediately whether their answers are correct.
All automatic scores and details of student work:
Instructors and section instructors can see scores and student work from the Gradebook
Automatic scoring also collects data about student performance on each item in every standard assignment.
- Score and other data is available to you in real time in graphs/charts on the Diagnostics View and in the Items area of the assignment Overview page for standard Mastering assignments.
- Consider checking these views before class to see how well students understood the material in recently completed assignments.
Points are allocated differently for these assignments (available in some courses), but responses are still scored automatically, unless noted:
Adaptive Follow-Up assignment scores are based on Adaptive Follow-Up settings. |
|
Dynamic Study Module assignment scores are based on Dynamic Study Module settings. |
|
Learning Catalytics session scores are based on Learning Catalytics module settings and question formats. Some question formats must be manually graded. |
Freehand Grader assignments are not standard assignments and are not scored automatically.
