You can make any of the following edits to labeling answers. For example, you might want to change a label or a target. Many of these edits are described in the section below, Create an item with the labeling answer type.
When you edit the labeling correct answer, be sure to select Save in the Configuration area.
- To add labels — Select add label. See step 3 Add the correct answer for instructions about how to add text, text with variable, or image labels. Be sure to select Update label for each label you add.
- To delete a label from the list — Select Delete label in the row for the label.
Tip: Although a deleted image no longer appears in the correct and incorrect answers for the labeling question, any uploaded image files remain in the asset list for the item unless you explicitly delete them from the Asset Manager. (The same is true for images you remove from anywhere in any answer type.) More about adding or editing images
- To resize a label placed as part of the correct answer — Select the label and choose Dimensions below the labeling canvas. In the applicable Default Text Labels or Default Image Labels area (1st or 2nd column), edit the width and height of the label by entering values or selecting the up or down arrows.
- To move a label into a target position for the correct answer
If the label is not on the background image or labeling canvas yet —
Select the label from the label holding area and drag it as close as you can to the intended target area. To get the label exactly where you want it, you may need to reposition it, as described nextTo reposition a label —
Select the label and choose Item Properties below the labeling canvas. Adjust the label position by entering values or using the arrows for the X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) axes.
- To reposition a label right or left — A positive value for the X axis moves the label to the right, a negative value to the left.
- To reposition a label up or down — A positive value for the Y axis moves the label up, a negative value moves the elements down.
- To reposition a label right or left — A positive value for the X axis moves the label to the right, a negative value to the left.
When you edit the labeling correct answer, be sure to select Save in the Configuration area.
- To add a target — Select Drag new target and position the target on the canvas. Adding a target this way lets you drag the target to the exact position you want. If you haven’t determined the target’s exact position yet, this method also lets you continue to move the target around easily.
- To delete an empty target — Select the target from the labeling canvas and then choose Delete from the Configuration toolbar.
- To delete a target associated with a label — First, send the label back to the label list by selecting the target from the labeling canvas and choosing Delete from the Configuration toolbar to. Then delete the empty target as described above.
- To resize a target — Select the target and choose Dimensions below the labeling canvas. In the Default Targets area (3rd column), edit the target width and height by entering values or selecting the up or down arrows. To save you time, these same dimensions are also applied to any subsequent targets you drag onto the background image.
- To move a target into position for the correct answer — To initially set the target, select Drag new target and move it onto the background image or labeling canvas. To move the target later, select and move it.
When you edit the labeling correct answer, be sure to also select Save in the Configuration area.
- To add a leaderline — Select Draw leaderline from the Configuration toolbar. The cursor becomes a cross. Begin drawing the line from a target or leaderline, extending it as needed. (Once you draw a leaderline, you cannot move it independently across the canvas.)
- To delete a leaderline — Select the line and choose Delete from the Configuration toolbar. Note that this action cannot delete any leaderline that's embedded in the background image. See the next section if you need to change the background image.
- To select the color for a leaderline — Select a leaderline so that its ends become active, then select Choose color for leaderlines from the Configuration toolbar. The available colors are black (the default), white, red, and yellow.
- To edit the length or angle of a leaderline — Choose Select from the Configuration toolbar and then select the leaderline so that its ends become active. Select an end and adjust the length or angle as needed.
You may want to replace the background image to revise a labeling question. Note that the background image is optional. If there is no background image, the label targets appear on a white background.
- To add a background image — Refer to step 2 Add a background image (Optional).
- To delete the current background image — In the Images area, select X for the background image file you want to delete for the labeling answer.
- To change the background image — Select the Background image button and add the new one, as described in step 2 Add a background image (Optional).
You can make the following property changes to a labeling question:
Select Randomize label order in the Properties area of the labeling Answer box.
Select Reusable labels in the Properties area of the labeling Answer box.
See the Group some labels subsection in the Create an item with the labeling answer type section.
From the Configuration toolbar, select either Labels at left (the default) or Labels at top. If the labels and background image won’t fit together in the selected orientation for the current canvas size, the message “There is not enough room to change the layout” appears.
You can edit the answer responses for a labeling question.
To add a wrong answer response — Select the add wrong-answer feedback link. For more details, see the subsection "Add wrong-answer responses to help students (Optional)" in the section Create an item with the labeling answer type.
To delete a wrong answer response — Select Delete choice in the row for the response.
To reorder wrong-answer responses — Choose the Move Up or Move Down arrows to reorder the wrong answers and associated feedback
To add follow-up text — Select the add follow-up text link.
To delete follow-up text — Select the remove follow-up link.
Students move the provided labels onto the blank targets. In the sample above:
- The labels contain text.
Alternatively, you could use all image labels or a mix of text and image labels. - Four targets have leader lines and one target is on the background image.
To see what labels and targets look like in a labeling question, see the previous section.
Label characteristics:
Labels can be text or images. The answer can contain a mix of text labels and image labels.
- For text labels: The label text can be plain text or formatted (bold, italic, underlined, subscript/superscript, or TeX/ChemTeX). Text labels can include math and chemical expressions. You can also define variables for text items.
- For image labels: You select the images from .jpg, .png, or .svg files uploaded to the asset manager for the item. The images must be an appropriate size to fit in the targets. (They don’t automatically scale.)
- For combination text + image labels: Prepare images that include the text as part of the image.
Starting position of labels: You can set the starting position of a set of labels to appear either above or to the left of the background image.
Other label qualities you can control:
- Randomize the starting order of the labels in student view
- Add extra labels as distractors
- Choose whether labels are reusable (that is, can apply to more than one target)
- Prevent the placement of certain labels on particular targets by assigning groups
Target characteristics:
- One label per target: Each target can accept only a single label.
- Target boxes are a uniform size: All target boxes are the same size, even if the size of the provided labels is different.
This is the completed answer box for the labeling question shown in the example student view above.
Notice the correct answer labels and targets shown near the bottom, as well as the correct answer string at the very bottom.

Create a labeling answer:
- If you'll be using a background image, it's best to have it ready before you begin creating the labeling answer.Details about the background image ...
A landscape image of about 710 x 420 px should allow for 5 small labels on the left. Use a smaller background image for more or larger labels, and less height to position labels initially at the top. The background image doesn’t need to include target areas or leader lines. See also step 2 in the "Add the correct answer" section below.
- From the Modified Mastering course menu , select Instructor Tools then Item Library.
Don't see the Instructor Tools option?
Select Item Library from the course menu. - Select Create New Item (page bottom) next to "Can't find what you need?" The Simple Editor opens in a new window.
- Specify the answer type.
Scroll down to the Answer box for the part. Select the dropdown menu next to Answer Type (on the right) and choose labeling. - In the Answer box, enter the following.
- Add the correct answer.
The answer includes the labels, targets, and any background image. - Set the size of the labeling answer box. (Optional)
The size includes both the unplaced labels in the label holding area and any background image. - Set any item properties. (Optional)

- Size for the labeling canvas: The default Standard (850x425 pixels) usually works well for the canvas, although you can select another size in the Size area.
The canvas size includes BOTH the background image and the label holding area. The label holding area can appear to the left or above the background image.
- Add a background image. (Optional) If you don’t include a background image,
the labeling canvas includes the label holding area and the label targets on a white background.
- Prepare your background image, if you haven’t done this already. The background image doesn’t need to include target areas or leader lines.About the background image size
If you accept the Standard size for canvas (850 x 425 px), the max dimensions of a landscape background image can be about 710 x 420 px for up to 5 small labels on the left. Use a smaller background image for more or larger labels, with less height for labels initially positioned at the top.
A max canvas height of 425 px allows students to see the question, labels, and background image, and to use the Submit button on most laptop computer.
Tip: To help you size and position the targets and labels later, consider including gray squares or rectangles to mark the label locations for the correct answer.
- Select Background image (below Images) to open the Insert/edit image dialog box.
- If you haven’t uploaded the background image yet:
Choose Upload to locate the image to add to the item’s asset manager. If the image has already been uploaded:

- To copy and paste as plain text: Copy text that includes formatting, such as bold or other.
In the Add item dialog box, choose Paste as text from the editing menu, select OK when asked if you want to paste as plain text, and then paste the selection into the text box using a keyboard command.
- Select Update label.
Add a text label with a variableVariables let you add randomized values in the labels that students will place. As you add text labels, you can either define a numeric variable (for simple numeric, a range of values, an equation, function, or another variable) or define a list variable (use a List ID to associate numeric or string values that can include letters, words, or expressions formatted with TeX or ChemTex). More about variables to vary item content
To add a variable in a text label:
- Enter any text that includes a variable name, without any spaces or special characters.
- Select the variable name and choose Add Variable.
- In the popup that opens, choose define to open the Define Variable form.
- Enter information to define the variable (whether numeric or list) and select OK.
- Select Update label.
Tip: After you’ve provided the correct answer, check the appearance of the variable values by choosing “Save & Preview” for the item. Or, check this later from either Standard View or Solution View.
Add an image label (including an image with text)Prepare your images:
Images can be in .jpg, .png, or .svg file format and up to 1 MB in size. The image items must be an appropriate size to fit in the correct answer—they don’t automatically resize to fit the labeling canvas.
- To set the size of the labeling canvas (labels and background image) —
See step “1 Size: Select the size for the labeling canvas“ above. - To resize the image label after it has been added to a labeling answer —
Select the label and then choose Dimensions. Under Default Image Labels, edit the width and height by selecting the up or down arrows or by entering values. - To provide text with an image —
Incorporate the text as part of the image before you upload the image into the asset manager. For example: - Consider uploading a few trial images into the asset manager for the item so you can add them to the labeling question and check their fit in Standard View (student view).
To use images for labels:
- Select Use image below the label box.
- In the Insert/edit image dialog box, select Upload.
The Upload file(s) window opens, with a list of any previously uploaded files to help you manage your image assets for the item.If you select a publisher image for a label: Note that some publisher images may include leaderlines in them. You may be able to edit out the leaderline.
- Follow the instructions at the bottom of the page (for browsing, uploading, and selecting) for each label image. More about adding or editing images
- Provide accessibility information for each image you add. [Optional]

Alternative Text: Enter a description (maximum 987 characters) that explains the image for screen reader users.
- Select OK to add the image as a label.
- Select Update label.
-
Continue to add labels by selecting add label, as needed. You can add extra labels to serve as distractors.
- To reorder a label in the list — Select the Move Up or Move Down arrows in the row for the label.
- To delete a label from the list — Select Delete label in the row for the label.
Tip: Although a deleted image label no longer appears in the correct and incorrect answers for the labeling question, any uploaded image files remain in the asset list for the item unless you explicitly delete them from the Asset Manager. (The same is true for images you remove from anywhere in any answer type.) More about adding or editing images
- Specify whether the label area should be on top or on the left.
From the Configuration toolbar, either accept Labels at left (the default) or select Labels at top.If the labels and background image won’t fit together in the selected orientation for the current canvas size, the message “There is not enough room to change the layout” appears.
- Configure the labels, targets, and any leaderlines.
Tip: If you haven’t done so yet, be sure to select Update label for each of the labels in the area above the Configuration area. This populates the labels in the Configuration area. (Otherwise they appear as Empty 1, Empty 2, etc.).
- Add targets (Optional) onto the background image or the empty canvas area.
To add a target —
In the Configuration area, select Drag new target and position the target on the canvas. Adding a target this way lets you drag the target to the exact position you want. If you haven’t determined the target’s exact position yet, this method also lets you continue to move the target around easily. To resize a target —
Select the target and choose Dimensions below the canvas. In the Default Targets area (3rd column), edit the target width and height by entering values or selecting the up or down arrows. To save you time, these same dimensions are also applied to any subsequent targets you drag onto the background image. To delete an empty target —
Select the target from the labeling canvas and then choose Delete from the Configuration toolbar. To delete a target associated with a label —
First, send the label back to the label list by selecting the target from the labeling canvas and choosing Delete from the Configuration toolbar. Then delete the empty target as described above. If you don’t add targets —
Targets are automatically added when you move labels onto the background image. However, you may then need to both resize the label and then reposition it to the exact position you want for the correct answer. - Add the labels onto the background image or the empty canvas area.
To add the labels —
Drag each label onto the background image, whether onto a target or not. If you can’t initially drag a label exactly where you want, see instructions below to reposition the label. To resize a label —
Select the label and choose Dimensions below the labeling canvas. In the applicable Default Text Labels or Default Image Labels area (1st or 2nd column), edit the width and height of the label by entering values or selecting the up or down arrows. To save you time, these same dimensions are also applied to any subsequent labels you drag onto the background image. To reposition a label —
Select the label and choose Item Properties below the labeling canvas. Adjust the label position by entering values or using the arrows for the X and Y axes. A positive value for the X axis moves the label to the right, a negative value to the left. A positive value for the Y axis moves the label up, a negative value moves the elements down.To group labels so they only apply to certain targets —
Select a label from the background image and then assign it to a group from the Item Properties area. If only Group 1 appears, select add group and then select add group again to create a second group. To delete a label —
Select the target and then choose Delete from the Configuration toolbar. - Add leaderlines (Optional) to either a target or another leaderline, not a label.
To add a leaderline —
Select Draw leaderline from the Configuration toolbar. The cursor becomes a cross. Begin drawing the line from a target or leaderline, extending it as needed. (Once you draw a leaderline, you cannot move it independently across the canvas.)
To select the color for a leaderline —
Select a leaderline so that its ends become active, then select Choose color for leaderlines from the Configuration toolbar. The available colors are black (the default), white, red, and yellow. To edit the length or angle of a leaderline —
Choose Select from the Configuration toolbar and then select the leaderline so that its ends become active. Select an end and adjust the length or angle as needed. To delete a leaderline —
Select the line and choose Delete from the Configuration toolbar. Note that this action cannot delete any leaderline that's embedded in the background image. See the next section if you need to change the background image.
- Add targets (Optional) onto the background image or the empty canvas area.
- Select Save from the Configuration area to save the correct answer.
When you do, the Correct answer area (below the canvas) shows each autogenerated Target ID letter that corresponds with the Label ID number. A correct answer for 5 labels might look like this: a=2:b=4:c=5:d=3:e=1
- To save your edits, select Save (from the top toolbar) or the Save & Preview link (top right). Do NOT press Ctrl+S (Windows) or Command-S (Mac OS).
To help discourage cheating among students, you should usually select Randomize label order in the Properties area of the Answer box. (Otherwise, all students will see the same initial order of the labels.)
However, if the labels are a series of numbers or other elements that make more sense to be presented in a specific order, leave this setting deselected.
If you want a correct answer to allow the same label to be applied to more than one target, choose Reusable labels in the Properties area of the labeling Answer box. Otherwise, leave this property unselected.
If you change the canvas size, layout, or the size of your labels, you may need to shift the position of all elements uniformly. To do this, select the checkbox for Select All Elements on the Canvas from the Item Properties area, then enter values or use the arrows for the X and Y axes.
A positive value for the X axis moves the elements to the right, a negative value to the left. A positive value for the Y axis moves the elements up, a negative value moves the elements down.
Select a label or target on the background image or blank canvas area. In the Item Properties area, enter a description of the target in the Target Alt Text box. The description should include any text that sighted users can see for the target, such as “Photosynthesis (in chloroplasts)” or a description of an image object, such as “frontmost cranial nerve”.
When you group labels, students can drag those labels only to targets that belong to that group. You can have up to 6 groups in a labeling question.
- Create a group: All labels belong to Group 1 until you add a new group. Choose Groups (below the labeling canvas) and then select add group to create Group 2. Labels associated with this group will be pink instead of the blue for Group 1 on the labeling canvas.
- Associate some labels with a group: Select a label from the canvas and choose Group 2 (or another group) from the label’s Item Properties area. The label turns pink on the labeling canvas. Continue adding other labels to the group, as needed. You can add up to six groups. All group colors meet color contrast guidelines for accessibility.
- Select Save in the Configuration area.
- Check Standard View. (Optional)
Select the Save & Preview link (top right) so you can test whether you’re able to drag the labels in Group 2 into any other targets than the ones for the correct answer.
To delete a labeling group — Return to the Groups tab, and select Delete in the row for the group.
- Although optional, it is recommended that you provide wrong-answer feedback. Wrong-answer feedback can help students learn from their mistakes or incorrect choices.
- Mastering provides the feedback "Incorrect; Try Again; x attempts remaining", followed by the wrong answer text you provide.
Add wrong-answer feedback for a labeling answer type:
- Select the add wrong-answer feedback link.
- Select a Target ID (a, b, etc.) or select any target.
To view the Target ID for a label:
Select the label and look at its Target ID box in the Item Properties area. - For Label, select either contains or does not contain.
- Select a label from the dropdown list.
