Create a standard Mastering assignment

A standard Mastering assignment includes items that you select from Mastering's Item Library. Instructors
- Create a new assignment
- Copy an assignment from this course or from another course, and optionally edit the assignment
- Copy a pre-built assignment (if available), and optionally edit it
The instructions below don’t apply to creating Scheduled Reading, Freehand Grader, Interactive Labs, or specialized assignments (Adaptive Follow-Ups, assigned Dynamic Study Modules, and Learning Catalytics).
Watch a video: Create a standard assignment and set basic properties
- From the Course Home: Select either Create your Assignments (Getting Started area) or Create Assignment (Assignments area).
From the course menu: Select Assignments and then choose Create Assignment.
- Confirm that Create a new assignment from scratch is selected and choose Continue.
- Follow the process steps to create the assignment. For instructions, select one of the links provided below.
- Open the assignment for editing.
- On the Edit Assignment page, select the numbered page for the aspect of the assignment you want to edit. For instructions, select one of the links provided below.
After you've followed one of the above procedures, the steps to define or edit an assignment are grouped on five pages for you to complete. To move from page to page, select a numbered page .
1: Settings — Assignment title, category or customized grading and presentation settings
2: Items — Filter the Item Library to find and select items to assign
3: Organization — Pool or randomize items; add a message or instructions for an assignment; adjust points; set items for credit, extra credit, or practice; and more
4: Outcomes (Optional) — Choose or add learning outcomes to associate with individual items in the assignment, so results can be summarized and reported later
5: Dates & Follow-Up — See the assignment in the student view, specify due date and availability dates, and add an Adaptive Follow-Up assignment, if available. For best practices when creating the Parent assignment for an Adaptive Follow-Up, see Tips for using Adaptive Follow-Ups.
